Pololu Honokane Nui Valley

So we wanted to see for ourselves if the trail was still blocked going into Honokane Nui. It is. :(

Here is the trail and where it is blocked.
There are a couple of paths that hunters and hikers have made that go down into the valley but these are not safe to say the least. Most of them would be passable if you added some rope.

Honokane Nui Valley Hike

I had been planning a trip into to Honokane Nui alley this weekend and so I called the Surety Kohala company to see if the trail had been reopened. The trail has been closed since the Oct. 2006 earthquake. The trail is still closed as of 4-14-08 and will be closed for the foreseeable future. They have tried to repair the trail but because of the size of the landslide every time they do it rains and washes the trail out again.

I have been wanting to do this trail for some time and I'm bummed that it's still not open.

Here are some pictures from my last attempt in march of 2007

Kilauea Ike Trail

Most of Volcano National was closed and there was no lava on the surface so we decided to go for a short hike. The 4 mile Kilauea Ike trail was perfect for this. The hike is a couple of hours long and is a great break after the long drive from the Kona side. The trail starts at the Kilauea Ike lookout point which is just off Crater Rim Drive and is about 4 miles.

Distance: 4 miles
Time: 2 hours
Elevation Gain: 460 feet
